Privacy policy

The short version

• You can browse the whole site without giving us your name or email.
• We have no user accounts. We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, and Google AdSense to show ads that help pay for it. Both use cookies (see Analytics and advertising).
• If you use the contact form or email us, we use what you send only to reply and deal with your request.
• Like every website, our hosting provider and the map and font services the pages load receive technical data such as your IP address.

What we collect

When you contact us

The contact form asks for your name, email address, a topic, an optional page or school and your message. When you send it, we also record the country your request came from (as reported by our hosting provider) and include it in the email we receive. If you email info@schoollist.au directly, we receive your email address and whatever you write.

When you browse

Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes each request to the site, which includes your IP address, browser details, the page requested and the time. We keep request and error logs from our site code for troubleshooting; these are held by Cloudflare under its standard short log retention.

To decide whether a school page map can use Google Maps within its free monthly allowance, the site keeps a count of map loads per month. That counter stores only a number for each month, not who loaded the map.

Stored in your browser only

The site uses your browser's local storage to remember your light or dark theme choice and the schools you have added to compare. This stays on your device; we never receive it. You can clear it at any time in your browser settings.

If you use "Near me" on the search page, your browser asks for permission to share your location. Your location is used inside your browser to sort schools by distance and is not sent to us.

Analytics and advertising

We use Google Analytics to see, in aggregate, which pages are visited, how people arrive at the site and what devices they use. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives your IP address, browser and device details, and the pages you view. We use these reports only to improve the site.

We show ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites, to limit how often you see an ad and to measure ad performance. You can turn off personalised ads in Google's Ad Settings, and read how Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can opt out of Google Analytics with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, and you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

Why we collect it

• To reply to your message, including checking and making corrections you report.
• To run, secure and fix the site, including protecting the contact form from spam and abuse.
• To show maps and fonts on pages.
• To understand how the site is used (Google Analytics) and to show ads that fund it (Google AdSense).

We do not sell personal information, use contact details for marketing, or add you to a mailing list.

Third parties and overseas processing

We use these service providers, which may process data outside Australia, including in the United States and the United Kingdom:

• Cloudflare, Inc. hosts the site and runs its server code on Cloudflare's global network. It processes every request and our logs. Leaflet's stylesheet is also loaded from cdnjs, which runs on Cloudflare.
• Mailroom, the email relay service we use, delivers contact form messages to our inbox at info@schoollist.au.
• Google serves the site's fonts (Google Fonts) on every page, and on school pages may serve the map (Google Maps). When your browser loads them, Google receives your IP address and browser details and handles them under Google's privacy policy.
• Google also provides Google Analytics and Google AdSense, which set cookies and receive your IP address, device details and the pages you view, as described above.
• OpenStreetMap Foundation serves map tiles when a school page map uses OpenStreetMap instead of Google Maps. Your browser sends your IP address to its tile servers when loading them.

When you follow a link to a school, government or other website, that site's own privacy policy applies.

How long we keep it

We keep contact messages and replies only as long as we need them to deal with your request and keep a record of corrections, and then delete them. Hosting logs are kept by Cloudflare for a short period and then deleted automatically. The monthly map counter holds no personal information.

Security

The site is served only over HTTPS. Contact messages are passed directly from our server code to our email relay and are not stored on the site. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold.

Access and correction

You can ask for access to the personal information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing info@schoollist.au. We will respond within 30 days. We may need to confirm your identity first.

School information on the site is about schools, not individuals. If a school's details are wrong, see the contact page.

Complaints

If you have a concern about how we have handled your personal information, email info@schoollist.au with the details. We will look into it and reply within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the site changes. The version on this page, with its effective date, is the current one.
