About Australian University of Theology

The Australian University of Theology is a private, specialist institution for theology and ministry. It began in 1891 as the Australian College of Theology, set up by the Church of England in Australia and Tasmania so that clergy could study divinity to degree level when universities would not teach it. It was registered as a university by the national regulator in December 2024 and took its present name in early 2025.

It works as a consortium rather than a single-site campus. Its awards are delivered by a network of affiliated Bible and theological colleges in several states, with an administrative base in Sydney. The affiliated colleges are represented in its governance, and the university also runs a graduate school of research. Its courses centre on theology, ministry and related disciplines, and it is one of two large theological college groupings in Australia, the other being the University of Divinity.

World ranking history

Australian University of Theology does not appear in the THE, ARWU, QS world rankings we track. These rankings mostly measure research volume and reputation, so smaller, specialist and teaching-focused universities are often not listed.

Ranks as published; bands such as 301–350 are not exact places, and "=" marks a tie. "In Australia" is the position among Australian universities in the same edition; universities sharing a band or a tie share a position. Each ranking measures different things, mostly research, and none of them is combined here. *Our copy of QS 2027 covers ranks 1–300 only.
