About Deakin University
Deakin University is a public university in Victoria, established by the Deakin University Act in 1974. It was the state's fourth university, the first in regional Victoria, and the first in Australia to specialise in distance education. It came from the combination of the State College of Victoria at Geelong and the higher education courses of the Gordon Institute of Technology, whose origins reach back to 1887. Its first students enrolled at Waurn Ponds in 1977.
Further growth came through mergers around 1990 and 1991 that added Warrnambool and campuses in Melbourne. Its main campuses today are in Melbourne's Burwood, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront and Warrnambool, together with an online Cloud Campus, and it has opened an international branch campus at GIFT City in India. Deakin's early involvement in distance learning continues in its large online offering.

Ranks as published; bands such as 301–350 are not exact places, and "=" marks a tie. "In Australia" is the position among Australian universities in the same edition; universities sharing a band or a tie share a position. Each ranking measures different things, mostly research, and none of them is combined here. *Our copy of QS 2027 covers ranks 1–300 only.
