About the University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne is a public research university and the oldest in Victoria. It was established under the University Act of 1853, following a 1852 budget allocation for a university, and teaching began in 1855 with a handful of professors and students. It is generally regarded as Australia's second oldest university.
Its main campus is at Parkville, just north of the city centre, where it has expanded considerably south of Grattan Street. Other sites in Victoria include Southbank, Burnley, Creswick, Dookie, Shepparton and Werribee, reflecting its work in fine arts, horticulture, forestry and agriculture alongside medicine, law and the sciences. It is known for its research output and for the Melbourne Model of broad undergraduate degrees followed by professional graduate study, and it is a member of the Group of Eight.

Ranks as published; bands such as 301–350 are not exact places, and "=" marks a tie. "In Australia" is the position among Australian universities in the same edition; universities sharing a band or a tie share a position. Each ranking measures different things, mostly research, and none of them is combined here. *Our copy of QS 2027 covers ranks 1–300 only.
