About the University of Newcastle

The University of Newcastle is a public university in New South Wales. It began in 1951 as Newcastle University College, run by the University of New South Wales, after which a long local campaign for independence led to it being proclaimed a separate university on 1 January 1965. Its first full intake of students came in 1966.

The main campus is at Callaghan, roughly 12 kilometres from central Newcastle, set on about 140 hectares of bushland. Other locations include Newcastle city, the Central Coast, Sydney and a campus in Singapore. The university has a regional identity as the university for the Hunter, and it is known for medicine and health, engineering, education and for widening access routes into study. It is a member of the Australian Technology Network.

Ranks as published; bands such as 301–350 are not exact places, and "=" marks a tie. "In Australia" is the position among Australian universities in the same edition; universities sharing a band or a tie share a position. Each ranking measures different things, mostly research, and none of them is combined here. *Our copy of QS 2027 covers ranks 1–300 only.
